Application Guidelines

The judges will use your biography and information you provide about your contribution to innovation in their decision-making. Please review these details before including in the Entry Form fields and document uploads. Entries close Friday 11 June 2010.

1. Photograph
Your application will not proceed unless a photograph is uploaded. The photo must be:

  • Include your name in the filename
  • In JPEG file format
  • High resolution (300dpi minimum)
  • Either head and shoulders, or formal full length.

2. Biography
Your application will not proceed unless a biography is uploaded.

This must be a Word document of no more than 300 words, using Arial 11pt font. Please ensure that you include:

  • Include your name in the filename
  • Your name in the document (please include any titles e.g. Mr/Mrs, Professor, Doctor).
  • Job title and current employer (or name of your company if self-employed).
  • Details about your innovative work, including latest innovations.
  • Any awards you have received for your work, particularly if related to innovation.
  • Other CV details and academic qualifications if appropriate.

Please bear in mind you must write and submit a bio you would be happy to see published in the National Business Review.

Please also ensure you thoroughly check your bio for clarity, accuracy, spelling and grammar.

If a rewrite is required, you will be asked to provide a revised bio.

Professor Olaf Diegel

Director, Creative Industries Research Institute

Auckland University of Technology
Professor Olaf Diegel is director of the Creative Industries Research Institute at the Auckland University of Technology, where he fosters interdisciplinary collaborative projects between University research areas (engineering, design, communication and software engineering) and industry.

This year Professor Diegel led the development of The Activa Xrystal – the first blood pressure monitor to use transparent LCD technology, which uses a laser cut stainless steel control panel to minimise components.

The HealthWorks software which accompanies the Xrystal is a health management software package that records blood pressure, blood sugars and weight, allowing the tracking of trends and averages over time as well as calculating cardiovascular disease risk.

In the past 10 years Professor Diegel has developed over 40 product innovations including theatre lighting products, security and marine products and home health monitoring products. For this work he has received over a dozen New Zealand and International product development awards and a number of academic awards.

Professor Diegel has a PhD in Product Development from Massey University, a Masters degree in Project Management from the University of Technology in Sydney, and qualifications in electronics and electronic engineering. He is also the author of over 20 publications including journal articles and books.

3. Your contribution to innovation

Your application will not proceed unless a document outlining your contribution to innovation is uploaded.

This must be a Word document of no more than 500 words, using Arial 11pt font. Please include your name in the filename.

Please tell us how you are making a contribution to innovation in your chosen category. This is an opportunity to provide more information about the innovation(s) you have been involved in developing, while explaining to judges how your efforts and innovations are making a valuable contribution to your industry or sector.
